The winter is a much loved season by many sportive individuals. The snow and the low temperatures create the best conditions for winter related sports. There are many winter sports practiced all over the world during winter. Some originally winter sports can be practiced indoors so skating, ice hockey and curling can be practiced throughout the year, regardless of the season.
Top ten most popular sports are: skiing, ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating, skeleton, ski jumping, bobsleigh, curling, snowboarding, and snowmobiling.
Skiing is by far the most popular winter sport. It can be practiced from early ages and there are many ski resorts spread all over the world. Aspen, Innsbruck, Vancouver, Salt Lake City, Grenoble and Lillehammer are just few of the most famous sky destinations.
Ice hockey is very popular in North America and in northern countries from Europe. Ice hockey is practiced indoors on artificial ice and there are important national and international competitions running each year.
Figure skating is another indoor sport very popular. Figure skating is the most TV watched sport from winter Olympics and the European and World championship are also considered very important sport events.
Speed skating is an Olympic sport but requires special skills and is generally practiced by professional athletes.
Skeleton, the sledge sliding sport, is an Olympic sport from some time. The skeleton started to be practiced in late 19th century in Switzerland.
Ski jumping is the most spectacular winter sport. There are three types of ski jumping competitions depending on the types of hills used: normal hill, large hill and ski-flying competitions.
Bobsleigh is an Winter Olympics sport since 1924, but it really draw the attention when the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team made its debut in 1988 at the Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They were the first bobsleigh team coming from a tropical country ever to participate in a winter sports competition.
Curling, with a history of 4 century, is the easiest winter sport from the Olympics. Being so easy and fun attracts many amateurs worldwide.
Snowboarding is one of the newest winter sports and attracts mainly young individuals. It requires very good skills and a good physical shape.
Snowmobiling is one of the most expensive winter sports to practice because requires a snowmobile that is not that cheap. Is more like a recreational sport but attracts more fans each winter.
